How this ranking is built

Source: the public NIH RePORTER API, refreshed October 16, 2026. See also our data methodology.

Dollar totals measure scale, not research quality or training environment. Our guide on how to read NIH funding rankings by university covers what these numbers miss.

  • What countsEvery NIH award record in the fiscal year — research grants, cooperative agreements, training and career awards, SBIR/STTR, and R&D contracts. NIH intramural research and interagency agreements with other federal agencies are excluded.
  • Dollar amountRePORTER's total award amount (direct plus indirect costs) obligated in that fiscal year, not the full multi-year value of each grant.
  • No double countingComponents of multi-project awards (P01, U54, center grants) are excluded; their dollars are already in the parent award.
  • Who an institution isRows follow NIH's recipient organization code, so a university's medical school, affiliated hospital, and separate campuses can appear separately. Subawards stay with the prime recipient.

NIH funding ranking questions

Which institution receives the most NIH funding in FY2026?

Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) received the most NIH award funding in fiscal year 2026: $854.5M across 1,334 award records. The next largest recipients were University of California, San Francisco, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, Washington University in St. Louis.

How much NIH funding went to outside institutions in FY2026?

NIH RePORTER lists $36.14B in extramural award funding across 57,110 award records to 2,407 institutions in fiscal year 2026 as of this snapshot; NIH is still posting late awards for that fiscal year, so the total can rise. The ten largest recipients received 19.7% of that total, and the top 50 received 56.8%.

Which state receives the most NIH funding?

California led all states in FY2026 with $5.04B in NIH awards to 358 institutions, 14.0% of funding to U.S. recipients in this table.

Why do these numbers differ from the BRIMR rankings or NIH RePORT?

Rankings differ by what they count. This page totals every NIH award record in RePORTER for the fiscal year, including grants, cooperative agreements, training awards, and R&D contracts, and groups them by the NIH recipient organization code. BRIMR ranks medical school departments and folds affiliated hospitals into schools; NIH RePORT's "Awards by Location & Organization" applies its own inclusion rules. A university's medical school, hospital, and other campuses can therefore appear as separate rows here.

Are subawards to collaborating institutions counted?

No. NIH reports awards to the prime recipient only. When a university passes part of a grant to a collaborator through a subaward, the full amount stays with the prime recipient in RePORTER, so collaborating institutions can look smaller than the research they actually host.

How often is this ranking updated?

The ranking is rebuilt from the NIH RePORTER API and was last refreshed on October 16, 2026. It covers fiscal years 2022 through 2026. Verify individual awards at reporter.nih.gov before citing them.
