What is the NIH T32 grant?

Who applies for T32

For trainees: you apply to the institutional T32 program (typically through your department or training program). For institutions: a senior PI assembles a team of mentors and applies to NIH for the T32 award itself.

When to choose T32

For trainees, T32 slots are an alternative to F31/F32 — they pay NRSA stipends and offer structured training. Many trainees move from a T32 slot to an individual F31/F32 mid-program.

When NOT to choose T32

T32 slots are subject to institutional priorities and are not portable. If you want award flexibility, target F31/F32.

T32 frequently asked questions

What is the difference between T32 and F32?

T32 is awarded to the institution that runs a training program. F32 is awarded directly to an individual postdoc. Trainees on a T32 slot still receive NRSA pay, but you apply to the program, not directly to NIH.

Can international students/postdocs hold a T32 slot?

Generally no — T32 slots typically require US citizenship or permanent residency, like F31/F32.
